To the Editor:

The now infamous tragedy at Burr Oak Cemetery is an event that will weigh on the hearts and minds of Illinoisans for years to come. The images shown of the discarded headstones and burial monuments throughout the media and the knowledge that the bodies of people’s loved ones were treated with callous disregard were mind-blowing, my colleagues and I in the General Assembly knew that we needed to take action. In 2010, we passed the Cemetery Oversight Act (COA). The legislation completely transformed the way cemeteries conducted business and recorded data. The COA provided strict regulations to ensure that disastrous events like those at Burr Oak never occurred again.

 Jones Meets with Students Visiting for Tech Day at the Capitol

Recently, State Senator Emil Jones III (D-Chicago) met with a group of students from Ryder Elementary Math and Science School. The group came to display projects they completed during the current school year and advocate to legislators about the importance of funding for charter schools.

Jones Keeps Fighting to Prevent Another Tragedy Like Burr Oak


Springfield, IL- Today, Senator Emil Jones III (D-Chicago) passed legislation to strengthen oversight provisions put in place by the Cemetery Oversight Act (COA) signed into law in 2009.

Senate Bill 1853 provides law enforcement officials with a procedure for dealing with situations like the one that occurred at Burr Oak Cemetery in 2009, when at least 300 bodies were illegally dug up and discarded in a pile so that their gravesites could be resold. Thousands of other bodies buried at the cemetery, including infants, have not been accounted for by their survivors.
